Getting first menses is one of the most visible sigh of starting puberty. Everyone is different when it comes t timing .The is nothing wrong if  you get your period later than your friends get period.

What is it?

The blood that leaves your body during period is the blood and tissue that built up as the lining of your uterus each month.it usually last from 3-5 days.flow is heavy on day 1 and 2. It is normal to have period that are either shorter or longer and even if the no of days changes each month.

How does it happen?

Ovary releases one egg every month.if the egg does not become fertilized by male sperm,the lining of uterus(endometrium) and egg gets washed out of vagina as menses.

When does it happen?

Menstrual cycle takes place usually and in a month but it may vary.this cycle includes not just blood flow but rise and fall of hormones and other body changes that takes over the month.

How to take care during periods?

  • Regular hygiene with warm water.
  • Use of sanitary napkins/tampons.
  • Continue routine activity.

Factors affecting periods

  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Hormones

When to see a doctor?

  • if no menses by age of 16 years
  • if period suddenly stops for more than 2 months
  • If bleeding is for more days than regular previous periods
  • if bleeding is heavy
  • if bleeding occurs in between periods
  • if you suddenly feel sick after using tampons
